Master’s Programme in Computer Science

In Kokkola, the Master’s Programme in Computer Science offers a specialization in Software and Telecommunications Technology, which includes a thematic module on Intelligent IoT Systems based on the university consortium’s research on sensor networks. Thanks to the versatile application possibilities of sensor networks, you have the opportunity to combine the skills gained from this education with your previous academic and work experience. The programme is also well suited for those interested in teaching computer science or working as experts in education-related fields. If you have completed pedagogical studies, the degree qualifies you to teach at various school levels.

Distance Learning from Your Hometown

The Master’s Programme in Computer Science is a flexible diverse learning programme that utilizes information and communication technology applications, enabling you to study alongside work from your own hometown. By leveraging educational technologies, we provide students with the most flexible opportunities to participate in teaching and complete courses. The approach is primarily based on the versatile use of recorded lectures, remote guidance tools, and a web-based learning platform. The study arrangements enable both distance learning and reviewing lectures. Teaching participation takes place remotely via the CiNetCampus video publishing system.

Every student in the Master’s Programme in Computer Science always has access to personal study guidance upon request. An individual study plan is prepared for all students, taking into account not only previous studies but also life situation and available time for studies. Studying can also be naturally integrated with working life; internships, project work, and the Master’s thesis (pro gradu) can often be integrated into the student’s employer’s own development projects.

Step 1: Register for the introductory courses

Who can register for the introductory courses?

The recommended educational background is a relevant lower or higher university degree (such as a bachelor's or master’s degree from a university or university of applied sciences). You may also register with a degree from another field, in which case a personalized study path toward full student status will be planned for you. More information about different study paths is available.

You can register for the introductory courses at any time.

Please note that the introductory courses and other teaching are provided in Finnish and therefore require sufficient Finnish language skills.

The next application period is in spring, from March 11 to March 25, 2025. Students selected in the spring round will begin as degree students in August 2025. (The autumn 2025 joint application takes place at the turn of August and September, and studies begin in January 2026.)

Note: To be eligible for admission starting in August 2025, you must apply for the study right through the joint application system by March 25, 2025, at 3:00 PM and complete the introductory course(s) – and any required supplementary studies – by May 30, 2025, at 3:00 PM.

If you are missing prerequisite studies for the Master’s Programme, you can complete them at the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä. This means that even if you are not yet admitted to the Master’s Programme, you can start your studies in computer science immediately. Once you have completed the required courses at the Open University, you can apply for full study rights in a future application round.
