During the project's needs assessment phase, it became apparent that, in addition to traditional groundwater level measurements, there are some wells in the Kokkola industrial area where electrical conductivity is also of interest. Electrical conductivity indicates the amount of minerals, i.e., salts, dissolved in the water. A change in the electrical conductivity of groundwater can indicate, for example, a discharge into the water or seawater entering the pipe. In the TAKOMO project, two sensors measuring electrical conductivity and pressure were installed in groundwater wells near the shore of the industrial area. The sensors continuously measure the values and send the data to a database twice a day. The measurements aim to determine whether seawater is rising into the wells and, if so, at what seawater level this occurs. It will also be interesting to see whether any rise in seawater occurs in both wells at the same time. The wells are located far apart, one on the eastern side of the area and the other on the northern side. If necessary, the measuring devices can be moved to other wells in the area during the project.
