Rain gauges have been installed at the southern and northern ends of the Kokkola Industrial Park. Rain gauges identify the type of precipitation and measure its intensity and total amount. This is important for estimating the snow load on roofs and the amount of meltwater, among other things. The measurements can also be used to estimate the regional stormwater load. The data can be used to retrieve rainfall accumulations for a specific period, for example, to determine the local rainfall for a day or month.
The installed rain gauges (Lufft WS100) use Doppler radar to identify different types of precipitation (rain, freezing rain, hail, snow, and sleet) and precipitation amounts. The radar can identify droplets between 0.3 and 5 mm in size. The radar itself remains operational thanks to internal heating.
