Information Technology Expertise Recognised at the Opening of the Academic Year

The long-term research and development work carried out by the Information Technology Unit was recognised at the opening ceremony of the academic year at the University of Jyväskylä’s Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius. Professor Ismo Hakala was awarded the Chydenius Medal, while Project Researcher Xinyu Tan was named Academic Contributor of the Year.

The opening ceremony speeches highlighted the importance of expertise and research for the growth and development of Central Ostrobothnia. The importance of cooperation between higher education institutions and other regional stakeholders was also emphasised, as was the key role of Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius in strengthening regional expertise and innovation. The recognitions presented at the ceremony provide one way of acknowledging this work and the individuals behind it.

Chydenius Medal Awarded to Ismo Hakala

The Chydenius Institute Support Association awards the Chydenius Medal annually in recognition of distinguished work in furthering the legacy of Anders Chydenius or contributing to the development of Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius. This year, the medal was awarded to Professor Ismo Hakala.

Since joining the university consortium as a professor in Kokkola in 1999, Hakala has, alongside his academic career, played a key role in building a substantial applied research and development unit specialising in information and communications technology at Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius.

As a result of this long-term work, the unit has developed into a significant research and development organisation whose activities contribute to regional vitality while strengthening Kokkola’s position within national and international networks of higher education and research cooperation.

Academic Contributor of the Year: Xinyu Tan

Project Researcher Xinyu Tan was named Academic Contributor of the Year in recognition of her distinguished research work and her successful integration of research with practical development.

Tan’s work has strengthened research activities and collaboration networks at Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius while increasing the international visibility of the research conducted there. Her work has also contributed to the development of IoT solutions that respond to societal needs and support sustainable development.

Recognition for Communication and Community Spirit

Other members of the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius staff were also recognised at the opening ceremony of the academic year. The Tutkittua perusopetuksesta working group from the Unit of Educational Sciences received the Science Communicator of the Year award. The group consists of Laura Rantavuori, Ulla Hietamäki, Raisa Harju-Autti, Outi Arvola, and Lassi Lavanti.

Marko Hägglund, IT Manager, received the Chydenius Spirit of the Year award in recognition of his solution-oriented, calm, and reliable approach to his work.
