FedCSIS 2015 participation

Jari Luomala participated in the Federated Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems (FedCSIS 2015), held in Lodz, Poland, on September 13­­—16. Jari presented a research paper on “Effects of Temperature and Humidity on Radio Signal Strength in Outdoor Wireless Sensor Networks”.

In the study, the effects of temperature and humidity on radio signal strength in outdoor wireless sensor networks were explored using Atmel ZigBit 2.4GHz wireless modules, both in summer and wintertime. All the radio channels specified by IEEE 802.15.4 for 2.4GHz ISM frequency band were used with two different transmit power levels. The results indicate that changes in weather conditions affect received signal strength. In particular, temperature seems to have a significant negative influence on signal strength in general.
